Tuscan character / Architecture
Siena, a different measure.
Il Campo: space, slope and colour.

At Il Campo, the gaze descends before rising again. The slope leads towards the Palazzo Pubblico; the shell shape gathers the buildings around an open space.
A colour made of relationships.
Saying ‘Siena red’ seems sufficient until one looks closely. Bricks, joints, light sections and shadow produce continuous variations. Colour belongs to the material, but changes according to what stands beside it. A wall reveals joints, openings and passages of light.
Geometry leaves room.
The travertine ribs make the piazza’s design legible. Each façade retains its own proportions, while the whole remains recognisable. We take away a measure: enough space for the material to speak. Which detail gains strength when what surrounds it leaves it room?
